As you have learned more about counseling individuals and families of African and African American Descent, you should have a better understanding their culture and values. Of particular interest is the relationship of many Blacks to mental health. To complete this week’s discussion board well, you should have completed reading Chapter 9. In addition, please watch the video below. Use the knowledge gained from the reading and the video to inform your answers to the reflection prompts.

- What stands out to you about this population? Does anything surprise you about the beliefs associated with mental health?
- What are some concerns you may have about working with this population?
- If this is a population that you have little knowledge or experience with, what is something that you believe you could do to learn more?
- If you identify with this culture, do you have differing beliefs or experiences?
- How might you work to build rapport, increase confidence, and decrease the stigma around mental health for this population, individual client, or group of students?
